City Varieties logoThis site has been a popular entertainment venue since the 18th Century, first in a pub called the White Swan and then, from 1865, the City Palace of Varieties. Famous performers from the past to have played here include Lily Langtry, Houdini, Bud Flanagan, Marie Lloyd and, before achieving Hollywood fame, Charlie Chaplin. Inside the City Varieties picture

Today the City Varieties is one of the few remaining music halls in Britain and of those, undoubtedly the best preserved. Twice each year there is a traditional music hall season (in April and October) as well as a wide range of traditional and contemporary entertainment such as comedy "farce", rock'n'roll musicals, light opera, clairvoyance, hypnosis, brass bands, alternative cabaret and stand-up comics.

An interesting Edwardian bar is open during performances.
